We all know it, Search Engine Optimization isn’t as easy as most so-called “experts” make it look. It isn’t all about keywords. In fact, there are more than 200 factors that come into play. Today we’ll talk about one of the most important factors: Backlinks.

What are backlinks?

A backlink is simply a link from another domain pointing back to your website. Simple, right? Well, yes and no. Not all backlinks are created equal, and there are a few rules you need to observe in order for them to benefit your site’s ranking. For example, your link needs to be a clickable hyperlink with anchor text

What makes a backlink more valuable than another?

Well, it depends. There are more factors that Google takes into consideration. The 3 most important are:

Authority: You can think of this as the site’s prestige/reliability – .gov & .edu are very high-authority.

Relevance: It’s a measure of how related is the content of the website you get linked from to your content. For example, if you own a pet supplies store and get linked by a sports news website, it won’t count as much as getting linked from a leading pet owner’s blog.

Trust: Even though it isn’t an official google metric, it focuses on how much a site obeys Google’s rules of search (ex. A website known for selling a lot of links without a rel=”sponsored” tag will have a low trust score)

How can I build links?

There are a lot of ways to earn high-quality links, which we mention in our FREE E-Book: How to build backlinks, but for the sake of simplicity, we’ll focus on the types of links building tactics you should AVOID at all cost.

Link Buying: You should never ever buy links! No matter how “high-quality” they claim to be, the short-term benefit is almost never worth it if you want to build a long-lasting business. Google will find out eventually and penalize your website. In fact, from my experience, I’ve never seen a website fully recover from such penalization even with a tremendous effort.

Content Automation / Article Spinning: Yes, we know that hiring a copywriter to write your content is very expensive. We all wish that we could just have a machine write all of our content and benefit from “High-quality” content without putting the effort in. Even though Artificial Intelligence has advanced quite in the last decade, it’s essentially a fight against the wits of Google Engineers. Even if your article would get a 10 in an English essay exam, it might still be detected as a “robot written article” by one of the complex Google Bots.
